Hector Greys

What I miss about home is ... Hector Greys.

A toy shop second to none. At least that was the way it was back in the day. Any trip into Dublin always included a visit to the shop. It was like an Alladin's cave, you never knew what treasures you might find in there. Do you remember a particular toy shop from your childhood?

  1. Hi Noel,

There was a toy shop I recall well in Belfast called "Leisure World". This was 4 storey building in Belfast's city centre which must have been NI's equivalent of Hamleys come JJB Sports. An absolute behemoth of a shop for any child and must've have contained "Ireland's largest toy department" (sorry parody of a quote from Father Ted Christmas special) covering 3 of its 4 floors.

I used to spend ages in that place, especially in the 80's when home computing kicked off with the old ZX Spectrum & Commodore C64.

Alas it's long since gone, having closed down shortly after I moved over to the 'mainland' back in '93/'94. And sadly for kids nowadays there's nothing really like it in Belfast - your Disney stores, Toys R Us & Smyths just don't touch it!

    Regards,

    David

  2. Hi David,

Thanks for the comments. I can only agree with you, the modern toy shops come nowhere near the old ones... Or maybe that the 'good old day's syndrome?

    All the best Noel
