Ashe's Pub

What I miss about home is ... Ashe's Pub in Camp on the road out towards Dingle, deep in Co. Kerry.

A real old world pub, not many left...

  1. Noel - I really like the lighting in the interior shot - it just enhances the 'old world'-ness of the pub. You certainly don't get many places like that; it looks like there's a traditional open fire place out of shot to the right. I can just imagine sitting there on a cold winters evening, a pint of the black stuff in one hand, a toasted soda farl by the other, getting warm from blazing fire and enjoying the craic with some mates. Bliss! Thanks for a taste of the old style old country, so to speak.

  2. David, thanks for the comment! Yeah a fabulous place to have a pint of the black stuff - and let me tell you it tastes different in Ireland. The shot is lit with natural light coming in froma small window behind me. This was in the middle of the afternoon one day last year when the sun shone... as for the craic, excellent and don't get me started on soda farls!!! but do keep watching for more food on this blog...

  3. Noel, hopefully you'll agree the skill re: pouring a pint a Guinness is a lot better than what it used to be on the mainland. When I moved over here back in '94 and ordered a pint of Guinness, I knew I was onto a bad thing when the guy behind the bar poured it straight into the pint glass (without angling the glass) and in one go. At least now most bar staff have been advised of the proper procedure!

  4. David, I remember going into a pub off O'Connell Street when I was studying and it was just after opening time ... back when they had an opening time... and the barman had about 5 or 6 pints linerd up - all at the different stage of a pour and settling. Your only man. I have lived over here since 1985 and I don't drink the Guiness.

  5. Noel, I presume you must go back home every weekend then for a proper pint? ;-) I couldn't stand having to wait for long periods for the times I return back home, in order to have a pint of Guinness!

  7. Hello Noel! Charley Duffy here, from the States (New York City). I had the pleasure of being sent to London in 2003 for work, then taking a week to enjoy Ireland on my own. Glorious, from Donegal to Shannon, and in between I found John Ashe's (Frommers hinted I go there for a "real" Irish pub). Walked in, a wee bit shy, wearing my NY Jets jacket, got stared at by the 8 patrons and after a delay I said, "I've come all the way from NY for a pint". The tender said, "Well hurry up we're closing".....and we all proceeded to shoot the blarney for hours. LOL
